James Tidwell
"Painting is a language which
cannot be replaced by another language."
Balthus
I would like to think that my
paintings are like a conversation among friends; hopefully a
pleasant and not too strident conversation.
I studied art and art history at The
Ringling School of Art in Sarasota,
Florida, The University of West Alabama in Livingston,
Alabama (where I grew up), and The University
of South Carolina, not graduating from any of them before
joining the army in !969.
My major artistic (and other)
influence has been my father, William Tidwell, who was a student
of the precisionist painter Ralston
Crawford and retired as the head of the art department at
Columbia College in Columbia,
South Carolina.
